At Microlise we're committed to developing technology solutions that help operators to manage and reduce risk while safeguarding drivers and other road users.
The Importance of Field Service Engineer Safety
If like many operators, you are beginning to focus on getting your fleet Direct Vision Standard-ready, the Microlise ClearVision multi-camera solution, which integrates with our telematics platform, will provide the visibility and peace of mind you need to safeguard your company reputation, your drivers, and other motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
ClearVision provides a big-picture perspective of what’s happening to, in, and around your vehicles at any point in time and when combined with other ‘Safe System’ components, allows you to manage a DVS-complaint fleet.
A nearside vehicle sensor system alerts drivers to the presence of vulnerable road users, while an audible vehicle-manoeuvring alert on the same side of the vehicle warns road users when the vehicle is turning left. Pictorial stickers provide an important visual alert, highlighting various danger spots and potential hazards around the vehicle.
However the Microlise offering extends far beyond DVS requirements with options for offside, rear and driver- facing cameras recording footage that is downloadable through integration with Microlise safety solutions.
According to Stephen Watson, Product Director, “The Microlise Clear Vision solution protects drivers and improves safety outcomes for everyone on the road including the most vulnerable of users. An in-cab screen displays footage from nearside, offside and rear blind-spot cameras. Activation of the nearside / offside cameras are triggered through the indicators, while engaging reverse gear activates the rear camera.”
“The system also supports road-based incidents, accident reporting and driver performance management by utilising high-speed mobile networks and state-of-the-art file compression to record and transmit video clips immediately prior to an incident or in the case of a near miss.”
“While DVS compliance will loom larger on everyone’s radar as we count down to March 2021, an overarching safety solution goes far beyond it - enabling driver peace of mind, strengthening safety culture, protecting organisations from malicious claims and improving outcomes for everyone on our urban and rural road network “ concluded Watson.
Driven by safety to provide industry-leading, integrated fleet technology, Microlise is the UK market leader across HGV telematics, with a current installed base of over 500,000 global assets. The company works with many of the transport industry’s leading operators, including 14 of the UK’s largest retailers and with industry heavyweights such as MAN Truck & Bus, Knorr-Bremse and JCB

Study says next five years will see significant uptake across both continents.
A new report is forecasting a substantial growth in the number of active video telematics systems across Europe and North America over the next five years.
The research carried out by M2M/IoT market research firm Berg Insight says the installed-base of systems will exceed four million units by 2024 across the two continents.
Helping Field Service Professionals
Last year (2019) the number of active systems reached almost 1.6 million units in North America which, the study says, is a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 15.7 per cent, a trend which should see the active installed base reach more than 3.2 million units by 2025.
In Europe, during 2019, figures for telematics solutions at came in under 0.5 million. In line with a CAGR of 16.1 per cent, the study expects this figure to reach close to one million systems by 2024.
The study categorised the large array of companies delivering such solutions which ranged "from specialists focused on video telematics solutions for various commercial vehicles, to general fleet telematics players which have introduced video offerings, and hardware-focused suppliers offering digital video recorders and vehicle cameras".
In the former category, the report cites Lytx as one of the "leading video telematics players in their respective categories", acknowledging the firms high number of subscriptions as the highest in the sector, which in 2019 reached over 600,000 devices and protected 1.3 million drivers.
The report's introduction argued that camera integration is one of the key trends in the fleet telematics sector, justifying its forecast of the combined number of devices across North America and Europe will exceed four billion by 2024.

Telematics firm outline its sustainability intention.
In 2019 Webfleet Solutions supported an initiative to compensate the carbon emissions from its supply chain and facilities. The project is being run in partnership with Justdiggit, a Dutch NGO focused on landscape restoration and positive climate impact.
Through Justdiggit, Webfleet Solutions invested in re-greening an area in Kenya larger than the centre of Amsterdam.
Webfleet Solutions has also encouraged its customers to switch to e-invoices, with 19,000 users now choosing that option. For every paper invoice that is still sent, Webfleet Solutions makes a further donation to Justdiggit.
“This partnership is a step forward in helping to reverse climate change,” said Wessel Koning, Business Development and Partnership Director, Justdiggit. “We all need to join forces and it’s great to see Webfleet Solutions’ commitment to creating a positive impact.”
“Our core fleet management solution, WEBFLEET already supports customers to reduce their fuel consumption and carbon emissions by between 10% and 25%,” said Thomas Schmidt, CEO and Managing Director, Webfleet Solutions. “But we want to do more. As a part of the Bridgestone Group, we share its global commitment to help achieve a more sustainable society. This initiative is an important element of us putting our part of that commitment into action.”

Telematics outfit win Innovative New Product category at Commercial Fleet Awards.
Telematics outfit win Innovative New Product category at Commercial Fleet Awards. Microlise has won the Commercial Fleet Award for Innovative New Product 2019 for its Driver Hazard Warning (DHW)
The Microlise R&D team created the DHW app by layering the space ahead of a vehicle into regions. The UK-wide, DHW hazard database was then created by collating local authority information, crowd-sourced map data and Microlise’s own Big Data. app.
The app warns drivers about height, weight and width issues as they approach them, but stops when a driver diverts away from the hazard.
Speaking after the award event, Microlise Chief Executive Officer, Nadeem Raza said: “Innovation is in our DNA and underpins our credentials as a global leader in telematics and transport management solutions. We are delighted to receive recognition for our DHW application as it addresses a very current and real issue for the road transport industry and for the wider community.
“DHW is the result of a concerted body of work, from the Microlise product management and development teams and draws on insight from customers and other stakeholder groups. We have made a significant investment to bring the application to market, to support hauliers and fleet operators in minimising bridge strikes and more widely, in helping to maintain the highest safety standards. We are also working on additional features to future-proof the application, by adding in other alerts including poor driving hotspots, seasonal weather–related events and crime hotspots.”
